Dog Coats in Spring
When It's Too Warm for a Dog to Wear a Coat

The winter months can be a tough time for dogs, especially those with thin fur or who are used to warmer climates. While some dogs are perfectly capable of braving the cold, others may need a little extra help staying warm.
However, it's important to remember that dogs can overheat just like humans, and wearing a coat in warm weather can actually be dangerous. So, when is it too warm for a dog to wear a coat?
Here are a few things to consider:
- The temperature. If the temperature is above 45 degrees Fahrenheit, your dog probably doesn't need a coat.
- The humidity. High humidity can make it difficult for dogs to cool down, so it's best to avoid putting a coat on your dog if the humidity is high.
- The activity level. If your dog is going to be doing a lot of activity, such as running or playing, they may not need a coat. This is because they will be generating their own heat.
- The breed of your dog. Some breeds, such as Siberian Huskies and Alaskan Malamutes, are naturally well-insulated and don't need a coat in most weather conditions. However, other breeds, such as Greyhounds and Whippets, have very thin fur and can easily get cold.
- The age of your dog. Puppies and senior dogs are more susceptible to overheating than adult dogs. This is because their bodies are still developing or have begun to decline, making it harder for them to regulate their temperature.
If you're not sure whether or not it's too warm for your dog to wear a coat, the best thing to do is to err on the side of caution and take it off. A coat can help keep your dog warm, but it's important to make sure they don't overheat.
Here are a few signs that your dog may be overheating:
- Panting heavily
- Rapid breathing
- Bright red gums
- Lethargy
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Collapse
If you notice any of these signs, remove your dog's coat and take them to a cool, shady place. You can also give them some water to drink. If your dog is still showing signs of overheating, contact your veterinarian immediately.
By following these tips, you can help keep your dog safe and comfortable in both hot and cold weather.
