Vitamin D toxicity may include vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, and excessive drooling to renal (kidney) dysfunction.

Purina is taking this action after receiving two contacts about two separate confirmed cases of a dog exhibiting signs of vitamin D toxicity after consuming the diet, to date. Once taken off the diet, each of these dogs recovered.

The affected dry dog food was distributed throughout the United States by prescription only through veterinary clinics, Purina Vet Direct, Purina for Professionals, and other select retailers with the ability to validate a prescription.

What to Do?

Purina recommends that pet parents immediately stop feeding the affected product to their dogs and discard any remaining food in a way that no wildlife or other animals can get to it .

It also recommends consulting your veterinarian if your dog has eaten the product and is showing symptoms such as weight loss, excessive drooling, vomiting, loss of appetite or increased thirst or urination.

So, how can you find a good brand? Here are 9 tips to help you find a superior food for your dog.

Tip #1: Check the Label

Pet food labels are loaded with lots of valuable information. Yet they can also be difficult to read. So, save yourself a lot of time and effort and f avor dog food brands that include multiple product lines with higher ratings.

That’s because lower rated recipes are more likely to contain:

Less meat
More by-products
Controversial preservatives
Anonymous meat ingredients

Tip #2: Consider the Company

Many dog owners tend to distrust larger pet food companies. They mistakenly believe smaller brands are more likely to make better and safer products. However, the facts tell a different story.

Consider this: 93% of all pet foods sold in the U.S. are produced by just 3 companies — Big Heart, Mars and Purina.1 Yet 73 of the 88 recall events documented on this website during a recent 5-year period2 are linked to products of smaller brands.3

In other words…

Even though smaller companies account for just 7% of the pet food and treats sold — they’re responsible for an eye-popping 83% of the recalls.

In addition, after conducting hundreds of interviews, it’s become apparent that…

So, although there are always exceptions, it’s important to keep in mind that larger companies are far more likely to:

Test raw materials for impurities and nutrient content
Conduct regular safety and quality control procedures
Own and operate their own manufacturing facilities
Verify finished goods before they are shipped
Maintain in-house testing laboratories

So, what should you do? Are dog foods made by larger companies better?

No, larger companies may or may not be better. However…

The smaller the dog food brand, the more critical it is for you to look beyond its label.

Tip #3: Identify the Manufacturer

Most dog owners assume their pet food company actually makes the products they sell. However, today, many companies use third-party co-packers to manufacture some — or all — of their foods. Yet others make their own. In any case, whether or not a company makes its own dog food is neither good or bad. What’s more important is to k now the identity of the manufacturer of any brand you feed your pet. Otherwise you’ll never be able to track its recall history or judge the safety of its products.

Tip #4: Question Product Design

What may surprise you is that there’s no legal requirement that a pet food be formulated by an animal nutritionist or any other veterinary professional. In fact, over the years, we’ve uncovered a shocking number of dog foods that have been designed by amateurs.

So, to ensure the nutritional health of your pet, you should c ontact each brand you’re considering and determine who actually designs its products.

By the way, just knowing who formulates a product is not enough. You’ll also want to know what qualifies that person to do so.

Tip #5: Confirm Nutrient Testing

It’s also important to know how the company can be certain each formulation is nutritionally complete and balanced. And how often nutritional content testing is actually performed. Does the company conduct laboratory analysis? Or do they run feeding trials? Surprisingly, we have found many (mostly smaller) companies that never do any testing at all. That’s why it’s so important to f ind out what a company does to test each product to be sure it actually meets AAFCO nutritional guidelines.

Tip #6: Investigate Ingredient Sources

No dog food can ever be magically better than the ingredients that were used to make it. Yet labels reveal little about the quality of the raw materials actually used to make the food. Some ingredients are purchased from commodity brokers on the open market — from the cheapest bidder. Others can come from countries known to have inferior food quality standards. However, superior companies tend to source their ingredients only from established local or regional suppliers they do business with on a recurring basis.

What’s more, Federal law does not currently require any pet food company to disclose country of origin — or any other sourcing information — on its label. That’s why it’s so important to k now the source of all ingredients that are used to make any dog food you buy. Avoid brands that will not share this information with you.

By the way, imported ingredients aren’t necessarily bad. In fact, many can be of exceptional quality. For example, some vitamin and mineral supplements are pharmaceutical grade and can actually be superior to those sourced from the U.S. or Canada.

Tip #7: Demand Transparency

Some pet food companies work hard to conceal critical information about their products. For example, we’ve actually stumbled upon a number of companies that attempt to create an artificial sense of customer support by using voice mail to take messages. Yet no one ever returns the calls. Some brands don’t even maintain a product website.

And others resist being questioned by independent websites like The Dog Food Advisor.

These companies make it difficult (or impossible) for us to get important answers — while blaming their own unwillingness to cooperate on the fact we are not veterinarians.

Think about it. Are there any questions presented in this article that would require the knowledge of a veterinarian to answer?

Obviously, hostile or defensive companies like these are the ones that most likely have something to hide — and should not be trusted.

For all these reasons…

Never buy any dog food made by any company that is not transparent about its products or its manufacturing practices.

After all, you have a right to know.

Tip #8: Verify Quality Control

At the time of purchase, all pet foods are at risk for containing:

Disease-causing pathogens (Salmonella, Listeria)
Mold toxins (aflatoxin, vomitoxin)
Environmental pollutants
Unsafe nutrient levels

And although many pathogens can be killed (pasteurized) during cooking, deadly toxins can remain in the food throughout the manufacturing process.

What’s worse, re-contamination can occur anytime living germs from uncooked food accidentally come in contact with a finished food product. That’s why you must n ever buy a pet food from any company that ships finished goods before obtaining negative test results for any form of contamination.

Some companies are more diligent about this safety measure than others. A few test every batch while others test only randomly. And yet some never test anything at all. In any case, even for us, it can be extremely difficult to determine just how carefully any brand administers its own quality control program.

Tip #9: Study the Recall History

Dog food recalls can provide some valuable clues about a brand’s manufacturing habits. Pet owners tend to misunderstand and overreact to dog food recalls. And they’re inclined to overvalue the real significance of these events whenever they occur. They forget that when it comes to any process involving human beings, errors are inevitable. Accidents are going to happen.

And that’s what makes dog food recalls so unpredictable. In fact, trying to forecast any pet (or human) food recall has proved to be impossible. Just the same, even though no pet food company can completely prevent a recall, it can control how it responds to such an event when it does occur.

Unfortunately, while some companies work hard to prevent a recall, others work even harder at covering them up. For example, some misguided brands have been known to conduct silent recalls — informing only their distributors about an event. And not the public.

Or they withhold the news about a recall and only release that information at the very end of the business week — just so they won’t have to deal with consumer questions.

Avoid buying dog food made by any brand that makes any attempt to hide recall events from the public when they occur.

Remember, most recalls typically involve only a limited number of product runs and batches. Just because a particular recipe has been recalled doesn’t mean the entire brand is defective.

So, please don’t make the same mistake made by so many other well-meaning pet owners. Don’t overreact and exclude a quality food just because of a few isolated events.

In the end, your dog could be missing out on some of the very best canine diets out there.

Of course, no system can possibly guarantee your dog’s food will never be recalled — or that your pet will approve of your choice.

According to APPA 2015/2016 report, there are nearly 78,000,000 dogs in the USA. The FDA recently published an article stating they have received 90 reported cases (.000001153% of all dogs) of pet illnesses related to cook bones. SMUCKER CONFIRMS EUTHINASIA DRUG IN POPULAR DOG FOOD BRANDS

The FDA has posted notice of a voluntary recall by The J.M. Smucker Company Inc. of canned dog food after the company confirmed pentobarbital in tallow used to manufactured the affected products.

In all, the recall covers more than 107 million cans of dog food in several flavors sold under the Gravy Train, Kibbles ’N Bits, Skippy and Ol’ Roy brands. Big Heart Pet Brands distributed the Gravy Train, Kibbles ’N Bits and Skippy dog food to retailers nationwide. Walmart Stores Inc. distributed the Ol’ Roy dog food.

Initially, the Food and Drug Administration FDA had agreed to allow Smucker to issue a “product withdrawal,” pending the results of lab tests. Once pentobarbital contamination was confirmed by the company itself, Smucker agreed to a voluntary recall.

Pentobarbital is a chemical sedative used by veterinarians to euthanize animals. The presence of it at any level in a pet food is illegal, and renders the product adulterated under federal law.

The recalled dog food is sold in individual cans and multi-can packs. Smucker products included in the recall are:

Excluded from Friday’s voluntary recall are a number of products reported previously by Food Safety News to have been withdrawn from the market, based on information obtained directly from the company. FDA has not yet resolved this discrepancy, an agency spokesperson said. Test results are still pending on finished product samples collected by FDA, and the agency is continuing its investigation.

What Consumers Should Know

Pets should not be fed any of the recalled products. Consumers should safely dispose of the recalled cans of pet food and/or contact the company or the place of purchase for information about returning the products.

Pets that consume a food containing pentobarbital can experience drowsiness, dizziness, excitement, loss of balance, nausea, inability to stand and nystagmus, which causes the eyes to move back and forth in a jerky manner. Consuming high levels of pentobarbital can cause coma and death. However, low levels of pentobarbital are unlikely to pose a health risk to pets, according to FDA.

People who think their pets have become ill after consuming pet food contaminated with pentobarbital should contact their veterinarians.

The FDA encourages consumers to report complaints about this and other pet food products electronically through the Safety Reporting Portal or by calling their state’s FDA Consumer Complaint Coordinators.

PET OBESITY CONTINUES TO CLIMB

More than 50% of cats and dogs in the United States are overweight or obese, according to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, and rates are on the rise. Moreover, a large majority of pet owners don’t realize that their obese pets are in fact overweight. According to Nationwide (formerly Veterinary Pet Insurance), the largest provider of pet health insurance in the nation, the number of obese pets in the United States is increasing for the sixth year in a row.

Data from the insurer reveal a 23% increase in total obesity-related claims over the past 3 years. This includes 1.3 million pet insurance claims for conditions and diseases that were directly related to obesity in 2015 – totaling over $60 million in veterinary expenses for the year.

Arthritis, the most common disease of overweight dogs, was the cause of more than 49,000 pet insurance claims to Nationwide in 2015. The most common obesity-related ailment in cats, bladder or urinary tract disease, added more than 5000 claims.

Nationwide advises the country’s pet owners that it is important for them to regulate their pet’s weight. What’s more, there are easy ways to do it. Suggestions include not feeding leftover food from the dinner table, keeping the pet’s diet consistent, lowering the number of treats pets receive, and making sure pets get out for regular exercise.

HOLISTIC BOARDING

Dear Sally,

The idea of a “holistic kennel” is fabulous. I commend you for taking a brave step and trying something totally different. For the readers, the term holistic means that there is an understanding that parts of the whole are interconnected. Medically, we use the word to mean characterized by the treatment of the whole pet, taking into account mental, dietary and social factors, rather than just the symptoms of a disease. Many people use the term holistic to mean “natural” which isn’t exactly what it means. For the sake of the article, I am going to assume you also want a natural component to your kennel.

The idea to build a kennel plan thinking of the pet as a whole is a very good idea. It is easy to build a kennel plan focusing on a money making business plan. It is much harder to build a kennel plan focusing on the complete care of the pet and in the pet’s best interest.

I do believe this concept will be very lucrative. There is a subset of the population who want their pets treated in a holistic manner. I currently work with a few holistic kennels so I will share some of the top 10 things I think should be considered while you build your business plan.

10. Define what holistic means for your kennel and make it very clear so that people cannot misinterpret how you are using the word. Make sure your mission statement is direct and advertise clearly so that you don’t upset “natural clients” who are interpreting the term as they see it. I think this is an important and easy step.

9. A thorough entrance exam is a must. A meet and greet interview, in my mind, makes a lot of sense, as well as spending an appropriate amount of time learning the individual needs of the pet. But on daily intakes, make sure one of your top staff members greets the clients and their pets and gives them a head to tail exam, looking for any red flags. A good exam will catch signs of an upper respiratory, ear infections, parasites, skin problems, just to name a few. This not only protects you but it also will show the pet parent that you are truly invested in their pet’s overall well–being.

8. Exercise, Diet, Sleep, Love. Make sure you are giving appropriate attention to each of these categories, as I feel they are vital to a holistic plan. These are important needs for a human’s overall health and equally important to a pet. Define your plan down to the subtle points. For example, pets have a natural light and dark cycle which is necessary to have healthy sleep patterns. You want to plan for this. Do not keep the lights on 24/7 and cause disruption to this pattern which will induce stress. If you have overnight kennel workers blasting a radio while they clean, this is also disruptive to the pets’ sleep. I would build a plan considering the importance of these four essentials and how you will incorporate them into the pet’s stay.

7. Vaccinations. Most clients who hear the term holistic are going to assume it means minimal vaccinations. You will want to have a policy in place about accepting titers in lieu of vaccinations for DHPP and rabies. Also, you may accept medical exemptions to vaccines (this is offered to pets with chronic health problems in some states). Dr. Jean Dodd, a prominent veterinary immunologist, recommends titers every 3 years. I personally would still have the owner do them every year since they are going into a boarding situation. I have seen titers change year to year so I believe an annual proof of titer would be good for your kennel.

You will need to decide if you will require the kennel cough or flu vaccines. If you are choosing not to, then make sure you have a good health check on your way in, as already suggested. Also make sure you have several zones for your kennel’s air flow so that, if there is an outbreak of any kind, you can quickly contain it.

6. Stress free. Consider other options for a stress–free stay. These can include noise therapy, aroma therapy, massage, cage set up to minimize visualization of other pets, etc. How will you reduce the pet’s stress in your holistic kennel?

5. Holistic care options. You may want to speak with your kennel veterinarian. I think it would be very cool to offer natural remedies for certain concerns. Eg; anxiety, stomach upset, aches and pains, etc. There are some really good safe treatments that may help pets stay more comfortable.

4. An on–call veterinarian. Make sure you have a vet who is on call or that can visit your guests. I think many clients will feel secure knowing that you have a vet who can come on site and check any concerns.

3. Parasite free environment. Please make biannual fecals mandatory. You can even collect them and have them tested at the owner’s expense. Many kennels do not require this and will get parasite outbreaks like giardia, hookworms, whipworms, etc. Let clients know that you care about their pets’ well–being by protecting their environment.

2. Real grass. I know artificial turf is neat and little pebbles are easy to clean, but the majority of pets pee and poop in real grass. I see a lot of pets who do not evacuate normally at kennels who do not provide grass as an option to be walked on or to have free roam on. Having an area of real grass is a necessity.

1. Every pet is different. I cannot stress that enough. If you are going to have a holistic kennel, I believe you need to make this your mantra and figure out how to cater to the individual. Make it as easy as you can for you and your staff to build a stay–care plan for each pet. What is the pet’s routine at home? Try to mimic that to avoid additional stress to the pet. Does the pet enjoy socialization with other dogs, quiet leash walks, or one–on–one play time with a care taker? Make an a la carte menu of items for the owner to choose from to make this the perfect stay for their pet’s personality and needs.

The first ingredient in this dog food is corn. Corn is an inexpensive and controversial cereal grain. And aside from its energy content, this grain is of only modest nutritional value to a dog. For this reason, we do not consider corn a preferred component in any dog food.

The second ingredient is meat and bone meal, a dry “rendered product from mammal tissues, including bone, exclusive of any added blood, hair, hoof, horn, hide trimmings, manure, stomach and rumen contents”.1

Meat and bone meal can have a lower digestibility than most other meat meals.

Scientists believe this decreased absorption may be due to the ingredient’s higher ash and lower essential amino acid content.2

What’s worse, this particular item is anonymous. So, the meat itself can come from any combination of cattle, pigs, sheep or goats — which can make identifying specific food allergens impossible.

Even though meat and bone meals are still considered protein-rich meat concentrates, we do not consider a generic ingredient like this to be a quality item.

The third ingredient is corn gluten meal. Gluten is the rubbery residue remaining once corn has had most of its starchy carbohydrate washed out of it.

Although corn gluten meal contains 60% protein, this ingredient would be expected to have a lower biological value than meat.

And less costly plant-based products like this can notably boost the total protein reported on the label — a factor that must be considered when judging the actual meat content of this dog food.

The fourth ingredient is animal fat. Animal fat is a generic by-product of rendering, the same high-temperature process used to make meat meals.

Since there’s no mention of a specific animal, this item could come from almost anywhere: roadkill, spoiled supermarket meat, dead, diseased or dying cattle — even euthanized pets.

For this reason, we do not consider generic animal fat a quality ingredient.

What’s worse, this fat is preserved with BHA, a suspected cancer-causing agent.

The fifth ingredient is soybean meal, a by-product of soybean oil production more commonly found in farm animal feeds.

Although soybean meal contains 48% protein, this ingredient would be expected to have a lower biological value than meat.

And less costly plant-based products like this can notably boost the total protein reported on the label — a factor that must be considered when judging the actual meat content of this dog food.

After the natural flavor, we find chicken by-product meal, a dry rendered product of slaughterhouse waste. It’s made from what’s left of a slaughtered chicken after all the choice cuts have been removed.

In addition to organs, this item can also include feet, beaks, undeveloped eggs and almost anything other than prime skeletal muscle.

On the brighter side, by-product meals are meat concentrates and contain nearly 300% more protein than fresh chicken.

The quality of this ingredient can vary, depending on the caliber of the raw materials obtained by the manufacturer.

The eighth ingredient is beet pulp. Beet pulp is a controversial ingredient, a high fiber by-product of sugar beet processing.

Some denounce beet pulp as an inexpensive filler while others cite its outstanding intestinal health and blood sugar benefits.

We only call your attention here to the controversy and believe the inclusion of beet pulp in reasonable amounts in most dog foods is entirely acceptable.

The ninth ingredient is wheat. Wheat is another cereal grain and subject to the same issues as corn (previously discussed).

From here, the list goes on to include a number of other items.

But to be realistic, ingredients located this far down the list (other than nutritional supplements) are not likely to affect the overall rating of this product.

With six notable exceptions…

First, we find brewers rice. Brewers rice is a cereal grain by-product consisting of the small fragments left over after milling whole rice. Aside from the caloric energy it contains, this item is of only modest nutritional value to a dog.

Next, dried peas are a good source of carbohydrates. Plus they’re naturally rich in dietary fiber.

However, dried peas contain about 27% protein, a factor that must be considered when judging the meat content of this dog food.

In addition, we find no mention of probiotics, friendly bacteria applied to the surface of the kibble after processing to help with digestion.

Next, the minerals listed here do not appear to be chelated. And that can make them more difficult to absorb. Non-chelated minerals are usually associated with lower quality dog foods.

Additionally, we’re always disappointed to find artificial coloringin any pet food. That’s because coloring is used to make the product more appealing to humans — not your dog. After all, do you really think your dog cares what color his food is?

And lastly, this food is preserved with BHA, a suspected cancer-causing agent.

Pedigree Dog Food - The Bottom Line

Judging by its ingredients alone, Pedigree Dog Food looks like a below-average dry product. But ingredient quality by itself cannot tell the whole story. We still need to estimate the product’s meat content before determining a final rating.

The dashboard displays a dry matter protein reading of 24%, a fat level of 13% and estimated carbohydrates of about 56%.

As a group, the brand features an average protein content of 25% and a mean fat level of 12%. Together, these figures suggest a carbohydrate content of 55% for the overall product line.

And a fat-to-protein ratio of about 47%.

Below-average protein. Below-average fat. And above-average carbs when compared to a typical dry dog food.

When you consider the protein-boosting effect of the corn gluten meal, soybean meal and dried peas, this looks like the profile of a kibble containing just a modest amount of meat.

Bottom line?

Pedigree is a plant-based dry dog food using a modest amount of poultry by-product or meat and bone meals as its main sources of animal protein, thus earning the brand 1 star.

Not recommended.

The third ingredient is barley. Barley is a starchy carbohydrate supplying fiber and other healthy nutrients. However, aside from its energy content, this cereal grain is of only modest nutritional value to a dog.

The fourth ingredient is sorghum. Sorghum (milo) is a starchy cereal grain with a nutrient profile similar to corn.

Since it is gluten-free and boasts a smoother blood sugar behavior than other grains, sorghum may be considered an acceptable non-meat ingredient.

The fifth ingredient is corn. Corn is another cereal grain and subject to the same issues as wheat (previously discussed).

From here, the list goes on to include a number of other items.

But to be realistic, ingredients located this far down the list (other than nutritional supplements) are not likely to affect the overall rating of this product.

However, flaxseed contains about 19% protein, a factor that must be considered when judging the actual meat content of this dog food.

Next, we find no mention of probiotics, friendly bacteria applied to the surface of the kibble after processing to help with digestion.

When you consider the protein-boosting effect of the corn gluten meal, flaxseed and peas contained in this recipe and the use of pea protein and soybean meal in other recipes, this looks like the profile of a kibble containing a modest amount of meat.

Bottom line?

Hill’s Science Diet Adult is a plant-based dry dog food using a modest amount of named meats as its main sources of animal protein, thus earning the brand 3 stars.

Recommended.
